Toebie van Hattem Artist

Toebie van Hattem is a multidisciplinary artist working across photography, film, music, digital art and LivingArt. His practice moves between personal observation, international travel, collaboration with other makers and the recording of human presence through image and sound.

Toebie grew up in an artistic family where creativity, freedom, travel and self-directed development were part of everyday life. From an early age he encountered different cultures and ways of living, which shaped an open, observant and independent perspective. As a child he appeared in the NPO/KRO-NCRV documentary Ik Moet Niks, which offered a public glimpse into his alternative upbringing, home education and free learning path. That early documentation still forms an important layer in his practice: not learning in order to fit into a system, but learning to observe, feel and give form from within.

Since 2019 Toebie has been developing his practice professionally through music, photography, film and audiovisual projects. Much of his work emerges while travelling: in France, the Netherlands, Japan, China, Poland, Romania and Australia. In his photography he searches for moments in which place, human presence and atmosphere briefly come together. Series such as Outer Worlds, Outsider, Romanian Experimentation, Countryside Romania, Love in a Castle and Friends Through Time reveal his gaze as a traveller, maker and outsider who is willing to look closely.

In 2025 Toebie worked in and around Melbourne on a growing body of photographic and visual assignments. He photographed event posters and promotional images for musicians and venues including The Motley Bauhaus, Bar Oussou, Voodoo Lovechild Speakeasy Bar, Balaclava Boogie Music Crawl and Showcase Victoria / Music Victoria Profile – Tobi A.O. Jay. These works show how his visual language functions within live music culture, performance settings and independent creative communities.

Alongside photography, Toebie works in music and video production. He has created music videos and visualizers through WOTC Productions, including Say To Me and PLANT A SEED, and has contributed to audiovisual productions such as Hey!, 2B – Short Film and LOST with Kevin within the context of Chrome Prophecy. His practice is therefore not tied to one medium: photography, sound, rhythm, film and drawing move through one another.

A key recent project is Chrome Prophecy, an art collective and platform that Toebie co-founded in 2025 with fellow artist Kevin Kutzschke. Chrome Prophecy focuses on collaboration between international makers, the sharing of the stories behind artworks and the visibility of creative processes. The project aims to break through isolation within artistic practice and bring art back to direct human connection: maker, work, environment and audience in one shared movement.

Within his photographic practice, Outer Worlds forms a central series. The work emerged during his travels through Japan, Australia and Romania and consists of images that feel as if someone from the outside is looking in. The series shows temporary worlds, human details and cultural fragments that might otherwise pass unnoticed. Outer Worlds is not only a travel record, but an investigation into looking, remembering and being present.

Toebie’s work is personal, direct and unguarded. He is not searching for distant perfection, but for a form of authenticity in which vulnerability, spontaneity and human energy remain visible. His practice is closely connected to the foundations of 2Born2B: freedom, self-direction, mutual coaching, international exchange and the belief that art can be a way to understand oneself and the world with greater care. Toebie is also part of 2Born2B foundation.
